Adam Smith, a Washington Democrat in the House since 1997, is the ranking member of the Armed Services Committee. His disclosed finances are modest and his only recent trades were his wife's one-day liquidation of an inherited IRA. His campaign relies heavily on PAC money, about a third of it from defense and aerospace contractors under his committee's jurisdiction. That is a correlation, not evidence of a quid pro quo. His 6.4% missed-vote rate in the 119th Congress is driven mostly by a September 2026 absence whose cause was not found.

None

H.R. 7008 bans new stock purchases by members, spouses and dependents; it doesn't force sales of existing holdings. The Senate vote was on the version paired with the SAVE Act, which is why no Democrat voted yes. Full breakdown →

Amounts are the ranges members must report, not exact values. The STOCK Act requires a report within 45 days of a trade; "late" counts days past that deadline, measured to the filing date.

His only periodic transaction report in Greederboard's 2024-2026 data lists 18 same-day sales on Aug 8, 2025 from his wife's inherited IRA, filed on time. The annual report explains she liquidated the IRA she inherited when her father died in 2021, moving the proceeds to a money-market fund. Household holdings are otherwise bank accounts, an S&P 500 index fund and pensions.
Net-worth enrichment in office

His 2025 annual report shows modest assets: joint bank accounts, a Vanguard 500 index fund ($100,001-$250,000), state pension accounts and the inherited IRA ($100,001-$250,000), against a mortgage of $50,001-$100,000. Nothing suggests enrichment beyond salary and savings over nearly three decades in office.

Correlation, not proof. Smith is the top Democrat on Armed Services. By Greederboard's keyword classification of FEC bulk data, defense and aerospace contractor PACs gave about 33% of his PAC money in 2024 ($245K of $751K) and 37% in 2026 ($225K of $612K): Lockheed Martin, Boeing, General Dynamics, RTX, Northrop Grumman, L3Harris, Huntington Ingalls, BAE and others at $10,000 each. OpenSecrets data cited by Gigafact made him the top recipient of defense-sector money among progressives in 2019-20 ($310,120) while he chaired the committee. That is concentrated money from the industry his committee funds, with no documented quid pro quo.

LegiStorm records ordinary staff movement: a longtime legislative assistant left in 2015 for a Washington state lobbying firm, and a former chemical-industry lobbyist became his communications director in 2019. Neither is shown to involve defense clients. No family lobbying was found.

Voteview shows 631 votes cast and 43 missed in the 119th Congress (6.4%). Most of that comes from one stretch: 22 of 29 roll calls missed in September 2026, without which his rate is under 2%. No public explanation was found for the September absences and nothing links them to fundraising, so the score stays low.
