Scott Peters, a San Diego Democrat in the House since 2013, sits on Energy and Commerce and Budget and is vice-chair of the New Democrat Coalition. His household is among the wealthiest in Congress, mostly through his wife's family office, Cameron Holdings. His spouse's 250 reported trades since late 2023 are Treasuries, municipal bonds and private funds, with no individual public stocks; a handful of 2026 private stakes are in energy and health sectors his committee oversees. His heaviest mark is money: a high PAC share and 2021 drug-industry contributions that coincided with his vote against a Medicare negotiation provision, which his office says improved the final law. He missed 1.5% of votes this Congress.

The stock-trading ban

H.R. 7008 passage, Jul 22, 2026
No
Cosponsored a ban bill
None

H.R. 7008 bans new stock purchases by members, spouses and dependents; it doesn't force sales of existing holdings. The Senate vote was on the version paired with the SAVE Act, which is why no Democrat voted yes. Full breakdown →

Amounts are the ranges members must report, not exact values. The STOCK Act requires a report within 45 days of a trade; "late" counts days past that deadline, measured to the filing date.

Greederboard's parse of 33 periodic transaction reports (Dec 2023 to Aug 2026) shows 250 transactions, all owned by his spouse and none in individual public stocks: mostly U.S. Treasuries and municipal bonds, plus private funds and direct private-company stakes. Volume is large ($52M-$84M in reported ranges, mostly Treasury roll-overs). 17 transactions were filed 1-4 days past the 45-day deadline. Several 2026 private stakes (energy storage, online health) sit in sectors Energy and Commerce oversees, which keeps the score above the funds-only floor.

Peters' household wealth comes largely from his wife Lynn Gorguze, CEO of the family office Cameron Holdings, and was already in the tens of millions when he entered Congress in 2013. Range-based estimates have bounced between roughly $40M and $112M depending on year and method, which reflects disclosure ranges more than growth. No sign of growth beyond prior wealth and market returns.

Correlation, not proof. Peters takes an unusually high share of PAC money (about $1.30M of $2.29M in 2023-24) and sits on Energy and Commerce, which writes drug-pricing law. KHN's database showed he received the most drug-industry money of any member in the first half of 2021 ($63,900), the same year he was one of three committee Democrats whose votes deadlocked a Medicare negotiation provision 29-29. His office said his pressure produced a version that later passed; his San Diego district is home to many drug companies.

No FEC finding, ethics complaint or reporting alleging personal use of campaign or leadership-PAC funds was found. A 2016 FEC matter naming his committee among ~58 respondents in a case centered on another campaign ended in a unanimous no-reason-to-believe finding.
