Where lobbyist money goes

Lobbyists and their PACs reported $880M in contributions given in the honor of today's members of Congress since January 2023 (LD-203 reports). The typical representative drew $1.1M and the typical senator $2.1M. Seniority explains a lot of that spread, so each member is compared here with members of the same chamber who have served about as long. Measured that way, members of House Ways and Means (1.7×), Senate Rules and Administration (1.6×) and House Administration (1.5×) draw the most, beyond what chance would explain, and members of Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs (0.5×), Senate Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry (0.5×) and House Oversight and Government Reform (0.6×) draw the least. 13 of 36 committees fall outside the range chance would give.

This is money around a member, reported by the givers: contributions from registered lobbyists and their PACs to the member's campaign and leadership committees, plus honorary expenses. It's legal and disclosed, and it says nothing about what a member did in return.

FIG. 1

Which committee seats draw lobbyist money, against members with similar seniority

Each dot is the median committee member's lobbyist money divided by what members of the same chamber with similar time in office typically get (1× = typical). The grey band is where the median of a random group of the same size lands 90% of the time; a dot outside it is unlikely to be chance. With 36 committees, about 4 would land outside by luck alone; 13 do. Open a committee to see its members.
